The Principle of Kinesiology Taping

It's a simple principle: assist our bodies' own healing mechanisms. 

 

These includes:

• Lymphatic disorders: Lymphoedema, lipo-lymphoedema, fluid retention and chronic venous insufficiency

• Musculoskeletal problems: Scoliosis, rheumatoid arthritis, shoulder / knees bursitis, joints / ligament injury, chronic back pain and more.

• Neurological: Sciatica, whiplash, numbness on the legs

• Respiratory disorders: Asthma, shortness of breath

Four basic functions and effects of Kinesiology taping are:

1. Improvement of muscle functions. ​

When a muscle is inflamed, swollen or stiff, the space between the skin and muscle is compressed resulting in constriction and congestion to the flow of lymphatic fluid and blood circulation. This compression applies pressure to the pain receptors resulting in the feeling of soreness to the affected area. Kinesiology taping application helps to lift the skin allowing increased lymphatic fluid and blood flow to the affected area to:

• Improves muscle contraction in weakened muscle

• Reduces muscle fatigue, over extension and over contraction

• Reduces muscle cramping and possible muscle injury

• Relieves pain

2. Pain reduction. 

The benefit from kinesiology taping is pain relief by stimulating large nerve fibers with: 

• Possible activation of spinal inhibitory system

• Possible activation of descending inhibitory system

3. Support of joint or ligaments functions. 

Joints are moveable connections between bones. The capsular ligament apparatus and the musculature are also involved in the control of joint movement. The mobility of a joint depends upon the type of joint and the surrounding structures (muscles, ligaments, and capsule). This is also relieves pain (Abbasi et al., 2020).

 

4. Elimination of circulatory impairments.

Inflammation is frequently the body’s reaction to tissue damage. Along with fluid in the injured area, inflammation leads to compressed swelling and an increase in pressure between skin and musculature. The lymph flow is disrupted or stagnates. The K-Taping application lift the skin on the surface, and that will be automatically make interstitial space / area gets enlarged, thus effects are decrease in pressure and inflammation while improvement in the lymph and blood circulation (Sobiech et al., 2022).​

Contraindications for Kinesiology tape application are:

• Open wounds

• Allergies to acrylic

• Acute of neurodermatitis or psoriasis

• Scars which have not fully healed

 

We are using D3 waterproof kinesiology tape which can last up to 5 days and daily activities such as showering should not be problem at all. We would  recommended to re-tape every 3 days from the start of the treatments. Depends on the areas and conditions, usually require at least 4 weeks and up to 4 months length of a course to be effective.
